Reps Inaugurates Committee on Rivers State

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has inaugurated a 21-member Ad-hoc Committee to oversee developments in Rivers State, describing the assignment as a matter of national importance rather than routine duty.

The speaker while inaugurating the committee in Abuja on Tuesday, emphasized that the committee’s role, empowered by Section 5 of the State of Emergency (Rivers State) Proclamation 2025 and Section 11(4) of the Constitution, is to monitor federal directives, ensure the caretaker government operates within the law, and help restore full democratic governance in the state.

Abbas urged the committee to work with federal agencies, security bodies, and reconciliation efforts to promote peace and rebuild public trust. He stressed that Nigerians will closely watch their actions, and the task demands transparency, integrity, and a strong commitment to the national interest. Abbas however stated that the National Assembly’s intervention is not driven by politics, but by constitutional duty to safeguard peace, security, and the rule of law. In response, the Committee Chairman, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, pledged that the committee would carry out its duties transparently and without bias.
